Can you go Powsurfing in Shallow Snowpack?

Early season snow coverage got you down? Well, it’s got us up! We’ve been ripping around making the best of it on our Grassroots Powsurfers. Another testament to how scalable (and fun) powsurfing is. Powsurfing in shallow snowpack can be a great time. We have a blast on both the biggest slopes when the time is right as well as the smallest hills and pastures.
There is so much potential for fun to be had in the tiniest zones in as little as a couple of inches of snow on the ground. It simply takes a little bit of creativity, the stoke to ride and of course a proper powsurfer that can handle shallow snow.
Riding without bindings (powsurfing and snowskating) makes the small hills fun & challenging and it makes the big mountains even bigger. With that challenge comes reward as the feeling is so satisfying whether you’re arcing a turn or sliding a log. With that disconnection from your board comes a whole world of freestyle and skate-style possibility. From the pastures of France to the sledding hill in your backyard, our crew knows how to squeeze the most fun out of any terrain. Get out there, get stoked and free your bind! Shot over the course of 3 days in November 2025.

Golf Courses, Sledding Hills and Low Angle Grassy Mountain Terrain Are the Answer

Can you go powsurfing in super shallow snow? Yes you can. When powsurfing in shallow snowpack creativity is king and terrain selection is your best friend. For those fortunate enough to live in places where snow sticks to the ground you’ll find local sledding hills, backyard hills and golf courses can hold some serious fun times and often times you can get by on 2-3 inches of snow atop the grass.  This will always depend on the density and/or water content of the snow and if you find the snow is too light seek out lower angled terrain.
These conditions are some of the perfect times to teach young kids how to powsurf. Hiking around is easy for them in shallower snow and they get used to hiking quick and short laps to keep their stoke high and their bodies warm. (Yes we make powsurfers for Kids of ALL AGES and we have for the past 16 years!) The same goes for adults.. these quick and easy laps keep you smiling and having fun in some really simple terrain.
If you get bored of the simple terrain you can build a small jump, slide a fallen log in the woods or bring a little rail with you to your spot and have a skate style session that will keep things interesting and quite challenging! Powsurfing can be as easy or as challenging as you decide to make it. Flex that creativity and you’ll come home satisfied and stoked.
Don’t get discouraged when the incoming storm doesn’t produce a ton of snow, get creative. Some of our most fun sessions have gone down in less than desirable snow conditions or in small peices of terrain where we were forced to open our minds and let the existing features or props we brought with us be the guide. When Powsurfing in very shallow snowpack be sure you know what’s underneath the snow. The last thing you want is to fall on rocks beneath the surface. Thing grassy slopes, campgrounds with a layer pine needles and local parks or golf courses. These places are among us, you just need to look with the powsurfers eye!
